When Chuck Norris grows up, he wants to be Willow Humes. In today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, you will have the opportunity to meet a young lady who will likely be one of the toughest, bravest people you will meet.
Willow grew up living within Deep Within Rehab in Peoria, Arizona, a center for recovering addicts and ex-cons operated by her parents Lee and Cindy Humes. At an early age, she was providing meals to the homeless population in downtown Phoenix. From there, she launched into the mission field, often serving in the Kids Kingdom orphanage in Imuris, Sonora and other needy areas around the world. Since graduating from both Northwest Christian and Grand Canyon University, she has been teaching gradeschool students at Jean Alexis Kuislin Christian Academy in Haiti through Mission-Haiti. During her time in Haiti, the island nation has been ravaged by earthquake, hurricane, tropical storm, assasinations, and numerous abductions of foreign nationals--so much so that the U.S. State Department now urges Americans to avoid travel to the country.
Having recently been evacuated from Haiti due to civil unrest and gang violence in the village where she was posted, in a Kingdom Culture Conversation with Mr. G, Willow opens up about what motivates her to stay on mission and refuse the comforts that so many commonly seek. In the process, we are left to ponder, "As Christ followers, are we meant to live comfortable lives?"
